 You or your spouse recently has received a job transfer to a new city. Or you’re hoping to live in a more hospitable locale where you don’t have to wear twenty pounds of protective clothing to keep from turning into a human icicle. Or maybe you just want to escape to a new environment. Whatever the reason, relocating to a new city can be an exciting time filled with great anticipation.
But such a drastic change also can be fraught with challenges galore, not the least of which is buying a home in an entirely new destination. As an experienced Realtor, I’ve learned several ways to ease the burden of finding a new home in unfamiliar territory. Follow these tips, and you're guaranteed to turn the big move into a far more pleasant experience:
* Conduct online searches complete with nightly email notifications – Sure beats driving around to find your dream home.
* Do community research and investigate crime rates online – You want to be sure your chosen neighborhood is the right one.
* Confirm the commute times from neighborhoods of choice to your job site – Unless you’re one of those people who gets to work at home, you better know how much of your life will be road life.
* Make sure everything is set for a move into the house that’s captured your interest – This means getting pre-qualified for a loan. For this, you’ll need to factor in other properties you own and the mortgages that go with them. Beware. You could be over-encumbered.
* Interview realtors who work digitally and make sure your agent can send you nightly email updates, texts, and virtual and email tours. Your Realtor also should be ready, willing, and able to process paperwork digitally nationwide.
